Nextgen widget public uploader

Hi,
I installed the public uploader widget with no results. It's not working with newest version of WP.
However, if a create a page, and place:  
[ngg_uploader id = 1]
In the page, it works but the page has this error message above the uploader:

</span>

with the upload and search buttons here.
It does work, although I would prefer not to have this warning in the page for all to see.
Any help or suggestions appreciated. Good plugin, but it seems to confilct with the newest version of WP.
